In de linker figuur worden de visualiseert Gunther Verheyen de variabelen die van invloed zijn op werk. In de figuur ernaast plot hij hierop 2 werkgebieden: (1) de ruimte van gestructureerde stabiliteit (ordered stability space), en (2) de ruimte van complexe nieuwigheden (complex novelty space)

Volgens Verheyen is veel werk verschoven naar het gebied van de complexe nieuwigheden en volstaat in dit nieuwe tijdperk 'het industriële paradigma' niet langer en is een nieuw paradigma nodig:
